The **Mid-Day Meal (MDM) Scheme** in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), as part of India’s national initiative, aims to provide free, nutritious meals to school children, improving their health and encouraging school attendance, especially in rural and underprivileged areas.
Key Features of the MDM Scheme in Jammu & Kashmir:
1. **Target Group**: Primarily children in government and government-aided schools, including those in rural and remote areas.
2. **Objective**:
- To combat malnutrition.
- To improve school enrollment, attendance, and retention.
- To provide a nutritious meal to children in government schools.
3. **Meal Content**:
- The meals generally consist of rice, vegetables, dal (lentils), chapati, and sometimes eggs or other protein-rich items. The menu may vary slightly depending on local preferences and availability of ingredients.
- The meals aim to meet a balanced nutritional standard, offering a mix of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
4. **Implementation**:
- The scheme is implemented by the State Government with support from central agencies.
- Schools are responsible for preparing and serving the meals, often with the help of local cooks or cooks appointed by the government.
5. **Challenges**:
- Logistics, such as transportation and storage of ingredients in remote areas, can sometimes pose challenges.
- Ensuring the quality and hygiene of food is another ongoing concern.
- There is also a focus on involving local communities in monitoring and improving the program's efficiency.
6. **Impact**:
- The program has been successful in increasing school attendance rates, especially in rural areas.
- It also helps in reducing hunger among children, thereby promoting better concentration and learning outcomes.
This initiative is part of a larger effort to improve the education system and public health in Jammu & Kashmir, especially in areas where poverty and food insecurity are prevalent.
